  85.   The San Diego Section of the American Radio Relay League (ARRL),
  86. will be hosting the 3rd annual Ham Radio Roundup on Sunday October
  87. 2nd, 1994 at Convair Missle Park located at Clairemont Mesa Blvd

  116. I use 75 ohm hardline on some U/VHF runs and ignore the loss, swr is 
  117. 1.3 to 1 caused by the mismatch.  At higher power levels it may be worth
  118. worrying about.

  120. Also remember that unjacketed aluminum hardline will have a dissimilar 
  121. metals problem with the galvanized tower and must be jacketed at any point it
  122. touches the tower.  I used a large diameter garden hose and 
  123. cut slices that i wrap the hardline in 
  124.

  368. The following appeared on the QRP email newsgroup. I'm posting
  369. it to show US hams how severe other countries can be in regard
  370. to licensing. Dan gave me permission to post it. It starts with
  371. Dan asking the QRP group for an IC-22A - he needs one quickly
  372. since to get his license (which he's been waiting for over one
  373. year) his station first has to be inspected by the government
  374. and only certain radios are approved by the govt (the IC-22A
  375. is one on them; on xtal rigs allowed on 2M).

  391. No idea how much it costs but am desperately looking for one. Was told that it
  392. should not be more than 100 bux. The reason for the desperation is that the
  393. authorities want to give me a license but insist on seeing my equipment first!
  394. Yes, dumb, but they're the law.

  396. Anyway, they've only approved exactly 10 models for 2M use and exactly 10
  397. models are out of production, and more than 10 years old. There are a few
  398. models that I am looking for:-
  399.  
  400. 1)      Icom IC-215
  401. 2)      Icom IC-22A
  402. 3)      Kenwood TR-2200A, TR-2200G
  403. 4)      Kenwood TR-7200, TR-7200G
  404. 5)      Yaesu FT-2F
  405. 6)      Yaesu FT-221
  406.  
  407. You may try other CRYSTAL controlled only models but bear in mind that each
  408. radio you submit for type approval will cost you $200 additional fee. Yep, I
  409. could buy another rig with that kind of money if I had it.
  410.  
  411. If you're wondering, they DON'T allow ANY kind of synthesized 2M equipment
  412. under ANY circumstances, and have no plans for allowing them. The reason is
  413. that amateurs are only allowed about 5 or 6 spot frequencies on the 2M band.
  414. Thus you can see the reason for my desperation.
  415.  
  416. Among other things I had to do was:-
  417.  
  418. 1)      Submit 2 character references
  419. 2)      Sign a statutory declaration of secrecy at the high court
  420. 3)      Give model and serial # of radio AND antenna! (must be < 10w ERP)
  421. 4)      Give schematic of installation and antenna
  422. 5)      Submit letter from Landlord approving installation of antenna
  423.  
  424. All this before they even consider issuing me a license. I need to get this
  425. radio by next month cos that's when they are supposed to give the license to
  426. me. I've got all my other papers ready and submitted most of them, now I need
  427. to get a radio (an almost extinct one at that). After all this, there is still
  428. no guarantee that they will issue a license, and they are not required to give
  429. a reason.
  430.  
  431. Oh, did I mention? They will send people to inspect my station to ensure that I
  432. am complying with all regulations AND that my equipment complies with what is
  433. declared. If I buy a new radio, that too needs declaration and approval first.
  434.  
  435.  
  436. This is a temporary restricted license I am referring to (novice) but I expect
  437. my general in December. For HF radios, there are about 35 approved models for
  438. use. $200.00 for approving anything else. The restricted class has just (less
  439. than 2 months) been implemented.
  440.  
  441. So, don't bother bringing any synthesized sets here. Same thing for handheld
  442. ones. People have done that, no luck with them so far. Foreigners must be here
  443. at least 3 months to even qualify to apply for a license.
  444.  
  445. In order to operate mobile, you need to apply for special permission/license.
  446. Otherwise, for FDs you need to apply for special permission also. Your license
  447. allows operation ONLY from your present location, as declared. If you move or
  448. change hear, you need to inform them in writing.
  449.  
  450. Computer logging of QSO's is not officially permitted.
  451.  
  452. Spot checks are conducted from time to time at your station to ensure
  453. compliance.
  454.  
  455. Maximum power allowed for the first year - 25w, thereafter 100w. For VHF, max
  456. power is 10w ERP. I was told (unofficially) that YAGIs are not permitted. On
  457. the first year, the general licensee can only operate A1A and A1B.
  458.  
  459. Special permission required to operate in most (if not all) bands above 2M.
  460.  
  461. Oh, yes. The theory test costs $40 ($20 for students) and the morse test costs
  462. $50 ($25) for students, restricted license $25 and general license $50. License
  463. needs to be renewed yearly, failure to do so will mean needing to retake morse
  464. test and to reapply. Theory tests are conducted once a year, and morse test
  465. twice a year. You pass the test, submit papers, then they might give you a
  466. license.
  467.  
  468. There's a big monitoring station around which listens in for abuse of channels,
  469. misuse etc. though this is not publicized, it is a well known fact.
  470.  
  471. Come to think of it, its probably easier to buy a gun in US than a radio here.

  538. When my 8-year-old got his license, I made up a mailing list from
  539. the QRZ CD-ROM and sent a letter to the 63 hams aged 16 and under in
  540. the 12-city area around us.  The letter included a preaddressed,
  541. pre-stamped postcard inviting them to fill in their call sign and
  542. be put on a permanent mailing list for group activities aimed at
  543. their interests and schedules.  Of 63 cards that went out, only
  544. four of these (PRE-STAMPED!) cards came back, and our attempts to
  545. get even this small group together -- for example, to drive down
  546. to San Diego (about 2 hours) for the Southwest Division convention -- have
  547. consistently run afoul of soccer, football, family activities, and
  548. the like.

  550. I would welcome *your* suggestions as to what kind of things a young
  551. operators' group could do that would make it more attractive than some
  552. of the other things that seem to fill young people's free time these days.
  553. Transmitter hunts are the only we've identified so far, and we hope to
  554. do one this autumn.  But it's tough.

  556. Even grown-up clubs seem to have a tough time these days: ours is
  557. looking for a president for next year, and I *know* what my XYL would
  558. say if I took on the job while we still have two kids in pre-school...
  559.
